The Science of Calm: How Educalm Supports Self-Regulation and Focus in K–12 Classrooms

Hey there, teacher friend. 🍎

If you’ve been in the classroom for more than five minutes, you know that you can’t teach a child who is dysregulated. When students are stuck in a "survival state", whether due to stress, big emotions, or sensory overload, the part of the brain responsible for logic and learning is essentially offline.

That’s why we created Educalm.

Educalm is our bilingual (English & French), online, ready-to-use daily mindfulness and co-regulation program. It’s designed to be the "easy button" for K–12 teachers who want to build a trauma-informed, focused, and compassionate classroom environment without adding hours of prep to their plates.

But we know you’re a professional. You don’t just want something that "feels nice", you want something that works.

WHAT EXACTLY IS MINDFULNESS IN THE CLASSROOM?

Mindfulness is simply the practice of intentionally focusing on the present moment. By practicing mindfulness, both students and teachers gain a "pause button" for their nervous systems.

Research consistently shows that mindfulness can reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression in both students (Black, 2016) and teachers (Harris et al., 2016).

In our world, we call this building the muscle of attention.

HOW MINDFULNESS SUPPORTS YOUR STUDENTS

When we integrate short, daily practices into the school day, we aren't just "taking a break." We are literally rewiring the brain for success. Evidence shows that daily practice helps students:

  • Increase Attention and Focus: Training the brain to return to the present moment (Poehlmann-Tynan et al., 2016).

  • Build Self-Regulation Skills: Learning to manage "big feelings" before they turn into "big behaviours."

  • Improve Academic Engagement: Regulated brains are receptive brains (Bakosh et al., 2016).

  • Reduce Behavioural Issues: Studies have shown a decrease in school suspensions when SEL is prioritized (Caballero et al., 2019).

WHY TEACHERS NEED TO PRACTICE CO-REGULATION

We often talk about student regulation, but at Breathe Grow Thrive, we are just as passionate about teacher well-being.

Teachers who use Educalm report better coping strategies for stress and an improved classroom management experience. Why? Because the program is designed for co-regulation.

When you "press play" on a 5-minute lesson, you aren't just supervising; you are practicing alongside your students. You are leading by example and calming your own nervous system at the same time.
