Formerly Educalme—now Breathe Grow Thrive. New name, same calming classroom tools (but better 😉).

Hi there! Welcome to the Breathe Grow Thrive community, we’re so glad you’re here!
In this practical guide, you’ll learn how to start a successful classroom mindfulness practice that helps K–12 students develop self-regulation, focus, and emotional well-being — no prep required.
Even if you’ve never tried mindfulness before, these five simple steps will show you exactly how to get started with confidence.
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment on purpose, with kindness and curiosity.
It’s not about “emptying the mind” or sitting perfectly still; it’s about noticing thoughts, emotions, and sensations without judgment. With regular practice, mindfulness helps both students and teachers manage stress, increase focus, and respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.
When students (and teachers!) build this skill over time, classrooms become calmer, learning improves, and relationships strengthen.

Help your students (and yourself!) stay calm, focused, and self-regulated—with just a few minutes of breathing exercises each day.

Just like reading or math, self-regulation is a skill that develops through repetition. The more often students practice mindfulness, the more natural it becomes to pause, notice, and choose calm responses.
That’s why the SEL & Mindfulness Foundations for K–12 Classrooms program is designed as a short, daily routine you can start right away. Each no-prep lesson takes only a few minutes a day. Simply press play, practice together, and watch your classroom environment shift.
Over time, you’ll notice fewer behavioural disruptions and more time for teaching and learning.
Let’s walk through the planning, practice, and reflection phases of bringing mindfulness to life in your classroom.
This step is completely optional and will depend entirely on you, your students and your school culture.
Some teachers like to let parents and guardians know that they’re introducing mindfulness in class. This helps build understanding and support at home.
To make it easy, the Foundations program includes a ready-to-use parent communication letter you can send as is or adapt for your school community.

Consistency is key!
Schedule 5–10 minutes a day for mindfulness practice.
Here are a few times that work well:
Elementary: Right after morning announcements
Middle & High School: The first 5–10 minutes of class
Flexible options: After recess, lunch, or even at the end of the day
When mindfulness becomes a predictable part of your routine, students begin to anticipate and value it, just like any other essential classroom activity.
Before starting, take a few minutes to explain what mindfulness is and why you’re doing it. Keep it simple and age-appropriate:
“We’re doing this practice to help our brains get ready for learning.”
“Mindfulness helps us notice what’s happening inside and around us so we can stay calm and focused.”
Set clear expectations for what mindfulness looks, sounds, and feels like in your classroom.
The Introduction to Mindfulness video, included in the Foundations program, does just this; it introduces students to this concept in a fun and accessible way.
Mindfulness isn’t something you “teach” at students. It’s something you practice with them. This is called co-regulation: when you model calm and focus, your students mirror it.
Choose how and where students will sit:
At their desks or tables
In a circle on the floor
In their own quiet spaces around the room
Then, press play on your audio and practice alongside your students. By sharing the experience, you help your classroom nervous system settle together, creating a sense of community, safety, and shared calm.
💫 Start your daily mindfulness routine today with the free SEL & Mindfulness Foundations program.
After each mindfulness practice, invite students to notice and share their experiences:
What did they observe during the practice?
How do they feel now compared to before?
What strategies were most helpful?
This simple reflection step helps students build emotional awareness and reinforces their self-regulation skills.
The Foundations program includes free printable reflection resources to guide these conversations with ease.

Starting a classroom mindfulness practice doesn’t have to be complicated. With the SEL & Mindfulness Foundations for K–12 Classrooms, you have everything you need to begin — no lesson prep, training, or extra time required.
Just press play, breathe together, and watch your students (and yourself!) become calmer, more focused, and ready for learning.
