Harness the Power of the Mind-Body Connection: The "Joyful Memory" Classroom Activity

Hey there, fellow educator. 🍎

We know the juggle is real. Between navigating complex student emotions, managing classroom behaviours, and trying to get through your actual lesson plan, it can feel like you’re running a marathon every single day. 🏃‍♀️

When the energy in the room feels heavy or scattered, it’s often because our students (and let’s be honest, sometimes we teachers, too!) are stuck in a stress response. Not exactly the ideal state for teaching or learning, huh?

But what if you could flip a switch and use the mind-body connection to bring everyone back to calm?

The best part? You don't need fancy equipment or a 45-minute lesson plan. You just need to tap into the power of a joyful memory.

WHY THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION IS YOUR BEST TEACHING ASSISTANT

Our brains are incredibly powerful. They don’t always distinguish between what is actually happening and what we are vividly imagining.

  • The Stress Response: Think about a stressful evaluation. Your heart rate speeds up and your muscles tense.

  • The Calm Response: Think about your favourite summer holiday or a delicious dessert. Your body responds with a hit of dopamine, relaxation, and maybe even a smile.

This is the mind-body connection, and it’s the "secret sauce" for self-regulation in schools. By intentionally guiding students toward a memory that brings them joy, we can physically shift their nervous systems from "stressed" to "ready to learn."

THE "JOYFUL MEMORY" EXERCISE: PRESS PLAY ON CALM

We want to make this as easy as possible for you. No professional development or extra prep is needed. We’ve recorded the audio for you so you can simply press play and co-regulate alongside your students.

STEP 1: THE GUIDED EXPERIENCE

Settle into a comfortable position with your class and play the audio below. Let our voice do the heavy lifting while you take a well-deserved 5-minute breather, too.

While you're there, don't forget to subscribe to our channel! :)

STEP 2: CONNECT AND REFLECT

After the audio finishes, help students anchor that feeling of joy. This can be as simple as:

  • Journaling: Writing down three details from their memory.

  • Art: Drawing their "joyful memory" to hang in their locker or cubby.

  • Five Senses: Asking, "What did your memory smell like? What did it sound like?", etc.

WHY REPETITION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Just like learning to read, self-regulation is a skill built through repetition. To truly see the magic happen, we recommend playing this audio for 5–10 consecutive school days.

When this becomes a no-prep part of your daily routine, you’ll notice:

  • Improved focus and attention during lessons.

  • Reduced emotional outbursts and classroom disruptions.

  • A "common language" of calm that makes classroom management feel effortless. 🙌
