Reflecting to Grow: How to Cultivate a Growth Mindset in Your Classroom (and Yourself)

Hey there, teacher friend. 🍎

As educators, we’re always looking for ways to help our students become more resilient. We want them to understand that their talents aren't "fixed," but are muscles developed through effort and the right strategies.

But here’s the truth we’ve learned from being in the trenches: if we want our students to have a growth mindset, we have to model it ourselves. 🧠

At Breathe Grow Thrive, we’ve moved away from goal setting that feels like a chore. Instead, we use a simple, no-prep reflection framework every month to celebrate wins—big and small—and set intentional paths for the future.

WHY REFLECTION IS THE SECRET SAUCE OF GROWTH

Did you know that our brains are naturally wired with a "negativity bias"? We often skip over our achievements because we're already looking for the next fire to put out. By taking a moment to pause and reflect, we:

  • Reinforce Learning: Regular reflection makes new habits "stick" in the long term.

  • Build Consistency: It helps us identify what’s actually working so we can double down on those effective strategies.

  • Model Self-Awareness: When you reflect out loud, you show your students how to navigate their own emotions and progress. Not exactly a bad skill to have in a busy classroom, right?

THE 3-QUESTION FRAMEWORK FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

You can use these questions for your own personal growth, or as a powerful Friday afternoon activity with your class. It’s a game-changer for creating a culture of co-regulation and shared success.

1. WHAT DO WE TAKE?

What new habit or mindful strategy have we been experimenting with that we want to carry forward?

Example: Maybe you tried a new transition routine. If it helped the class settle faster, "take" it into next month!

2. WHAT DO WE KEEP?

What habits are already serving us well and deserve to stay?

Example: Perhaps your daily Educalm "press play" moment is finally feeling like a natural part of the day. Keep that—it’s the foundation of your classroom calm.

2. WHAT DO WE LEAVE BEHIND?

What habit or mindset is no longer serving us?

Example: It’s time to let go of that negative self-talk or a routine that always ends in chaos. Making space for growth means being honest about what isn't working.

INTERNALIZING MINDSETS THROUGH OUR FREE RESOURCE

One of the most effective ways to help students internalize a growth mindset is through positive affirmations. When students repeat phrases like "I am capable" or "I can do hard things," they begin to shift their internal narrative from frustration to power.

To help you bring this into your classroom, we’ve created a free resource pack of 5 Mindful Colouring Pages and Posters. These are designed to be a ready-to-use tool for promoting calm while reinforcing the very mindsets we want our students to "take" and "keep."

Your free download includes affirmations to build resilience:

  • "I am capable" to remind students of their inherent potential.

  • "I can do hard things" to encourage perseverance through challenges.

  • "I am strong" and "I am kind" to support emotional well-being.

  • "I am calm" to practice self-regulation in the moment.

REPETITION IS EVERYTHING

You can't teach a growth mindset in a single lesson. Just like reading or math, it requires repetition and daily practice. By using these reflection questions consistently and supporting them with mindful tools, you’re building a classroom environment where every challenge is seen as an opportunity to grow.

P.S. Remember, these reflection questions work wonders for teacher stress and burnout, too. Taking five minutes to acknowledge your own "wins" is a radical act of self-care!
